Winston’s covers Greenland to Iceland Via The congo

the prophets of Eternal Fjord

Some books in the post before my next review , first up is a huge epic from Atlantic The prophets of eternal Fjord  by Kim Leine , A Danish novel following a priest sent to Greenland to convert the locals but he finds they have their own settlement at the Eternal Fjord on his arrival. An interesting book I know little about Danish history and very little about their time on Greenland so be a chance to learn some more.

tram 83

Now this is one that has been on my radar for a while Tram 83 came out earlier in the year in America , set in a war-torn city it follows the locals , students and ex-pats as they spend their evenings in the only night club in the town Tram 83. One that I had want to read for a while so great it is being published here by Jacaranda books, the publisher that  does mainly African fiction.

snow and night blind

The there is the second in the dark Iceland series, a series following Ari Thor Aarson a young detective sent to a small northern town , in the first he has to deal with the death of an elderly writer and this Night blind his second book follows him investigating the death of a well liked policeman. Ragnar Jonasson has translated Agatha Christie into Icelandic, sure some of her writing skills have rub off on him whilst he translated her books.

Winston’s covers how to read a Novelist

image

Another day another library book arrives I sometimes get carried away on the library catalogue system.but this is one for me plan to pimp up the reviews for the blog add a bit of blind as this blog slowly clock up it 600th review two to go. I feel need to learn a little bit about reviewing not enough to lose my own voice but enough.to given my own voice a sound of the knowledge Base I have but sometimes struggle to convey in words. So this book is a collection a reviews interview and pieces about writers from John Freeman many years in the lit world.

Winston’s cover 5 the Turkish Nobel

image

I brought this back from librar after work yesterday a new book by Orhan Pamuk is always worth reading he for me is knew of those nobel winners that win for consistent books not fireworks but just good books every time and this is a epic charting forty years of a Boza sellers life through Istanbul from the 70s to 2012 a time which saw the city grow families strained and the role of woman in Turkey change

Winstons covers 4 Infinte fail ?

infinte jest

Todays cover is one of those rare failed to reads for me. I was struck by Jonathan’s post here. Where he spoke about failing and trying again which is something I didn’t do with Infinite Jest I tried a few summers ago when there was a mass reading called the Infinite summer which I tried, but stuggled when Wallace start on about tennis , I have mention this before call this a silly scarred childhood of watching wimbledon after school at a family friends house when I would rather be at home or even outside. Lets face it Tennis in those days was a bit drawn out, any way this book was already in my mind after watching the trial to a forthcoming film The end of tour which is about a long interview he gave when a fellow writer joined him on the later stages of the tour for this book .The end of tour looks great what do you think ?

Sheffield day with Amanda some books

This past weekend saw Amanda and I both off for the weekend for the first time in a long while so we decided to have a day in sheffield. We started the day with a trip around the large indoor shopping centre Meadow hall , it has two small waterstones bookshops but I was waiting for later in the day and the chance to go too the large main city centre branch of waterstones but one treat I did have in Meadowhall was a Donut .This was a Biscoff donut anyone that knows me is I love my Bicoff lotus biscuits the perfect coffee biscuit I say and this donut went great with my espresso.

biscoff donut

I have a rule of three in bookshops never buy more than three books in one shop these days so my three choices weren’t so easy but in the end I settle for an old favourite writer and two new names ,

Laszlo krasznahorkai

I brought war and war earlier in the year but had wanted to read The melancholy of resistance more , so brought it to complete my Laszlo Krasznahorkai collection. THe book rather like Satantango follows a small town as it reacts to an incomer , this time it ia s mystery show with the worlds largest Whale and just that the locals are wary of these new circus folk. I’m in a circus mode as we are busy watching the fourth series of american horror story the freak show series. The book has also been made into a film by Bela Tarr who also did the film for Satantango.

Schlump Grimm

I had this on my list of books to buy since its Translate Jamie first mentioned this book  Schlump is the story of a 17-year-old on the German front at world war two a story that is brutal and funny at the same time the writer wasn’t truly known to 2013 many years after Grimm had died he later was in the nazi party even thou this book was burned he bricked up his original manuscript in his house, he later was called in 1950 to talk about his war-time record and two days later he committed suicide .I hope have this read for end of German lit month .

Ippolito Nievo

The confessions of an Italian is the story of Carlo altoviti an old man looking back at his life in Italy this happens to be in the period called the Risorgimento, which saw the small states that had made Italy at the time join together to make it a bigger country. An epic novel Italo Calvino called it the one 19th century Italian novel which has that charm and fascination so abundant in foreign literature . What better recommendation could you have .

What books have you brought recently ?

The butt – the end of an affair

Illustrations of cigarette packets

Today saw Will self’s intro to the forthcoming book Nicotine by Gregor Hens a book about stopping smoking. So I taken a twist of style here and decide to do a piece about my years of smoking .On january 4th this year I smoked my last cigarette after 24 years of smoking , I don’t remember the time or even if it was a normal cigarette or a roll up. I made my mind up and stopped as I had many times before but then in a Newtons Cradle like effect two days later I dislocated my elbow and thus spent the next six weeks at home, which was enough to finally break the cycle of me as a smoker I had smoked more at work than at home the last few years so being at home I just held on til the day I felt I was clear of smoking. But lets turn the clock back twenty years when did all start well the was a first cigarette on a geography field trip at 15, but even then I didn’t start fully smoking til I was eighteen. As will said in his essay cigarettes are a love affair. For me its connections brands people, places and times of life. Woodbines my first job working with old people one of which smoked woodbine the filterless strong cigarettes have a unique taste not that of filterless french cigarette no a smell that at once made you think of world war two films and the smoking in them and the smell of cigarettes like woodbines as people smoked in those films.Player number six my stepfather a man I don’t get on with hence a brand i never brought, More my late stepmother’s brand when she smoke I see them and think of her a classy cigarette for a wonderful woman and then JPS blue and old black remind me of My Amanda and my best friend both of which smoke them . Tobacco I remember the first time I really got tobacco rolling cigarettes it was the first time I met my ex on an exchange between Northumberland County Council and Nordrhein Westfalen and being stuck on a moor fixing a stone wall and smoking roll up with two german girls, I later lived in Germany with one of those girls where I used cycle with here the 5 km to Holland to buy even cheaper tobacco there the brands in a Dutch tobacconist  shop there are  mind blowing number of brands, I was  like a kid in a sweet shop tried many types but always loved the brand Javaanse Jongens Enteng a more expensive tobacco. How to light a cigarette well for me it was always a zippo I had many zippo lighters over the years, I had a habit of losing them but there was that strange petrol taster of lighting  cigarette with a zippo, myths no third light from a match (I believe this comes from world war one and the trenches but not sure if that is an urban myth) . As the year passed prices grew so I stopped smoking gauloise Malboro or Camels to cheaper brands, They stop me smoking in pubs but I carried on , stood in the cold and rain on nights out for the last few years of smoking was a change from the early days like an affair that has drifted on two long I end up smoking roll ups and finally this year felt brave enough to say good-bye to what had maybe been something  I hide behind I smoked, I talked with my cigarettes being part of me. I did at one point never view the time when I would have the affair with them but now looking back it is like the bad taste of a mistaken love affair in the mouth bitter and one wonders why you did it in the first place .I will be reviewing Gregor’s book next month he will also be suggesting five short books from German .

Reading Europe German Lit on the radio

Look who's back

Today saw one of my favourite books get on the radio , Look who’s back by Timur Vermes  I reviewed this book last year .The book is a satire about Hitler returning to Germany in 2011 , 66 after the last day he remembered was in 1945 , as we see him tackling the new world that surrounds him . He finds people have forgotten who he is or thing he is a comic that does Hitler on the german tv .The amount of turkish people now in Berlin and things like TV , Starbucks or Herr Starbuck’s as he calls it the rise of his coffee shops . I’m so happy this was choosen to as part of the BBC reading europe series . For me when I reviewed this I said how well Jaime the translator of the book   had caught the  voice of hitler , this has been carried over in the performance of David Threlfall  which is  just perfect .He has  long been one of my favourite actors and in this performance he  captures what we feel Hitler must have been like if he spoke english in the 1940’s , that madness that is just below the surface of him  ,.He has the feel of a man on the edge but just on the edge . we see how Hitler becomes a star of the new media age  on a comedy show (presented by a Turkish comedian ), The TV folk think he is actually a very clever comedy  act , not the real person . Some great lines , where he takes some one to pieces about their knowledge of Poland , his constant thoughts about  what he would do to people around him  and looking for his  new Bormann .The final discovery the internet a wonder to him  .You can find this the first episode here  .If you want to see how Hitler finds modern Germany .Another triumph for Jamie Bulloch , he also translated Every seventh wave and forever yours which were also on the radio .

26 years on the shelf my latest library book

20150923_171846

I was busy checking the library system and found a Peter Handke , which I think may have been lost before the new library system came online in Derbyshire last month , as I ‘m sure Peter Handke is a writer I would have search for before for a german lit month of just because he is a writer I have enjoyed in the past especially his work with Wim Wenders on the films they have made together The goalies anxiety at the penalty kick , The wrong move and of course one my all time favourites wings of desire .I picked this up yesterday from my library (very handy only two mins walk and great staff ) .I noticed this evenong that it had been 26 years since this book was last stamp so this poor Peter handke has been sat around waiting to be read again .Have you ever check a book out that has sat around for years ?

A few days in York

20150915_144835

We have just  returned yesterday after three days in York .I managed to write up  the last three post ,before I went away .We missed a holiday earlier in the year so choose to have a couple of nights in York to make up for it .We decide to do a ghost walk on the first night around the minster and shambles in York .This was from the doors of the minster and I would recommend this walk to one and all the chap doing it fitted the part to a tee , he was old in black and a top hat and had lived in york most of his life .He told us about the cat trail a series of cats place around York .

20150915_104053 .So we managed to sleep after tales of dead Roman soldiers marching in front of you  and children being sealed in a plague house (two of the stories from the tour ) .

20150914_184509

We passed this every day on our way into York the birthplace of Auden .The second day we visited a few shops and then we had booked to do a tour of the Chocolate story a history of the chocolate making in York the quaker families that started Terry’s Rowntrees and Craven , how they started to make chocolate the iconic bars like Kitkat and chocolate oranges (and lemons once upon a time ) .The tour end with a trip around the gift shop and a very nice hot chocolate .

20150915_123900

We then took a bus tour where we saw Cliffords tower at the top of this post a number of the gates and the castle and wall of York .

20150915_150856

We then took a walk by the river and then through the park where A chap said you could feed the squirrels , Amanda tried this and got very close to this squirrel but screamed as it got to near .

20150915_153803

Now back to what the blog is about , yes I can confirm there is a number of bookshops in York and I visited a number of them and this is what I came back with .

20150915_182930

These are the books , the first for  my Moomin readings .Books from writers I know already Amos Oz ,Andre Malraux  , Heinrich Boil  all three have featured on the blog . Another is one mentioned years ago Franz Werfel who Peter Stefan Jungk mention in an interview a number of years ago as he had written the biography of him . Baiha blues is a prize-winning French novel set in Brazil .A second book by Alain Robbe Grillet to the one I read earlier this month . Then there is The brothers Karamzov a book I should have read but haven’t .Then the huge epic Red Horse by Eugenio Corti a highly regard novel in Italy it was their book of the decade .So We are planning a return trip next year to go to all the places we haven’t seen this time .

To Read or not too read ? But leave Terry alone !

jorge-luis-borges

Borges describe Heaven as a kind of library .Now what would be in that library . That is a good  question for everyone it would be different as we are all different  I haven;t read Terry Pratchett but when I read an article the other day called Get real Terry Pratchett is not a literary Genius  , a dreadful piece by a writer that hadn’t read .The books of the writer he was so easy to cast away as inferior .A good question is why pick a writer you have no knowledge of and that has just died .Who decides if he will be literary or added to the cannon of books well time many books have been considered inferior when they came out  .The writer of the piece , said the outcry  for Terry was far more than when Gunter Grass and Gabriel Garcia Marquez .Well maybe the outcry was more in Spanish and German for both these writers ? A quick search for Gunter grass is dead in german turn up pages of results . I love both those writers but would I want them to have had more coverage than Terry Pratchett’s death no  I don’t Terry got the coverage he deserved , for a good  many reason his willingness to talk about  his dementia , the fact he touched his fans far more than both Grass and Marquez have (sorry but any one seen a gathering of his fans on tv knows they would died for him ) and is considered someone who has made a lot of males in the 18-30 age group pick up a book  and read for those three reason alone but you could caryy on and I could name one reason each for Marquez and Grass why coverage would be less but I am no Troil . So as this Paris review piece said it is to troil writers , we all know writers that don’t appeal but maybe we should all live in our version of Borges’ Heaven a library of our choice be an odysseus on a voyage of books discovery and maybe along the way slay a few monster we may not know of be scared of . I haven’t read Terry’s books but we all have that choice not to read as I wish I had the article in the guardian .I may never read Terry Pratchett but thats because he isn’t on my journey to Ithaca , but I admire what he did .

Winston’s books Open Letter books and Nobel winner ?

IMG_20150824_151425

Well I arrived home to three brown envelopes through my door a real bonus , on a day that had been busy at work . I opened them to find three more books to add to the one I got on Saturday from US publisher Open Letter which is attached to the university of Rochester and their three percent website (a real joy for serious lit in translation fans ).The three books were a collection of Poetry from the Italian poet Lucio Mariani , A  well regard and translated poet .Then there is The physics of sorrow by Georgi Gospodinov , a Bulgarian writer , I have reviewed two books from Bulgaria and have a third on my pile of books to review , so I am pleased to read another what seems by the cover blurb another witty and clever books from Bulgaria and he was suggested back at london book fair to me as another writer from that country to read  .Then last but no means least is  a French novel and writer that has been on my wish list for a good while since I heard of an earlier book Minor Angels by Antoine Volodine , I have want to enter the future world of radical writers and exploring the power of writing this book is part of a great project that interconnects a lot of his books . Then below is the book that arrived is another to add to the 10 other writers I have read from Argentina Juan Jose Saer latest translation is a collection of three stories around Exile and memory .He sadly died a few year ago but is another I had on my radar for a while . I am hoping this may spike interest in the uk to this publisher making it easier to get their books in the uk .I know they are easily available on amazon , but I like to buy my books in a bookshop and the nearest place to get their books to me is Nottingham or Manchester .

IMG_20150822_124620

Then I got two books from the library today that I had ordered one writer that maybe should have won the nobel in his time Alain Robbe Grillet was a leading writer in the Noveau Roman movement also a filmmaker , last year in Marienbad was his film .I managed to find my library system had one this one project for a revolution in New York .Then there is a name that has been around as a future winner the last few years and thankful my library managed to find the copy they had at last of Voices from Chernobyl the oral history of  nuclear disaster written by Svetlana Alexievich , I always try to read one or two of the names not mention in regards Nobel Literature prize .

Hello , hello from Soho to Finland dead bodies are dead bodies

20150819_174653

I started this weeks as a change and I had two already and couldn’t justify get another from the British library crime classics and this book a wartime murder in soho fits perfectly an easy reading break from the recent books I have read which include two books by Nobel winner Patrick Modiano . The book is about missing plans and a dead well-known figure in Soho life .I was remind some what of the Rathbone Holmes films with this book .The sort of books and films that sold well in the war years .

IMG_20150818_164138

Then as a by chance this arrived yesterday from Finnish writer Kati Hiekkapelto the second book featuring her detective Anna Fekete the first from Orenda books thou . Anne and her husband both work for the police and one is investigating a murder with an au pair as the suspect the other illegal gang of immigrants .LIke a scream in soh a cast of suspects from outside the country .That is the only comparison I can make but I am neck high into crime this week .A welcome change of pace and two interesting books from different times and places .

Do you use crime sometimes as a break from Lit book ?
