An interesting list, Stu. Not too sure about Coelho as representative of Brasil, but there’s some good stuff in there. I see you’ve went bigtime for the Archipelago Books titles. Of all your titles, I have fifteen of them on my shelves, but the only one I’ve read through is The Blind Owl. Trippy!
Have you read Kurkov’s Death And The Penguin already? Or are you just jumping into Penguin Lost?
Must admit i not overly sure about coelho ,yes the archiipelago’s are so nice ,the ones i ve got in mind for rest are a few more african titles and from some of the smaller eastern european countries .thanks for you advice on some titles
The Alchemist by Coelho is one of the worst books I’ve ever read: new age hippy nonsense with no depth in the writing, raisd only by its meaningless message, which some interpret as real insight. Saying that, you’ll be able to get through it in no time.
For Brazil, here’s a few other writers: Clarice Lispector, Milton Hatoum (new translation out in 2010), Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, Rubem Fonseca. Only read Lispector, but greatly enjoyed it.
Great list! I’m reading Snow at the moment and finding it the perfect book for this time of year.
I look forward to reading your thoughts on the Blind Owl, as it was far too weird and dark for me.
Enjoy reading yourself around the world!
sorry for delay in reply looking forward to snow pamuk clever writer ,will let you know my thoughts
If you haven’t read it yet, and are still looking for countries you haven’t covered, I can recommend Pramoedya Toer’s This Earth of Mankind for Indonesia. Best book I’ve read so far this year.
many thanks jason i ll have a look that is one part of the world i felt challenge was thin
