Over the weekend i heard a podcast about jewish book week ,and an interview with the israeli writer Amos Oz where it was suggest he may be a future nobel winner .he wasn’t sure if he would win but would be honoured if he did ,In recent years the winners have been relatively unknown in britain ,but hugely succesful in their own country’s people like Hertha Muller ,J M G Le Clezio and Orhan Pamuk .After a run of four european winners i feel it ll be a non european writer this time round .here are a few i ve in mind
america’s
- Michael Ondaatje -the Canadian has written many great novels and is well-respected
- Carlos fuentes-mexicos most prolific novelist of the last twenty years
- h c Moya -outspoken houndrian writer
- Mario Vargas Llosa – the peruvian has a wonderful body of work behind him
asia
- Murkami – the japanese writer should win one day would be great time to win with new novel due late this year
- Rohinton mistry-respected indian writer
- Peter Carey australia greatest living novelist
africa
- Al AswanY – popular egyptian writer
- Tsitsi Dangaremga -zimbawian writer would be a fresh choice

An interesting and thoughtful post Stu. Personally Murakami is long overdue the prize, so I hope this is his year for it.
I’m also a bit of a fan of Alaa Al Aswany too (not as much as Murakami obviously) so if he took the prize this year then I wouldn’t be too disappointed either.

Rohinton Mistry is also a favourite, but I’m not sure he’s written enough books.
agree in a way with mistry ,feel shoul of put rushdie down too he has written more books than mistry and is maybe more consistant
Throwing in the voice of dissent here, but I think Murakami would be a waste of a Nobel. Admittedly I’ve read little of him – Dance Dance Dance; half if Hear The Wind Sing; and a bit of something else – but the impression I got was of a horrible similarity in all and a bit too sledgehammer with his ideas. I do want to read his running book, though.

The last Asian to be awarded the Nobel was in 2000, when Gao Xingjian took it. True, he became a French citizen a few years before, but he’s Asian. And not long before that was Oe Kenzaburo, of Japan.
One may well argue that it’s been some time since an African (at least a non-South African) was recognised (which would be Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz), but it doesn’t really matter because it’s a not a prize about nationality, regardless of what people think. Or, indeed, someone from Oceania, as Patrick White was the last one back in the seventies.
It’s as simple as the active members of the Swedish Academy debating a shortlist of a few nominees and picking the writer that, to them, fits in best with the will of Alfred Nobel: that they produce the best work in an idealistic direction.
yes agree either africa or ocenania haven’t won a lot either ,sure who ever it is it’ll be out of the blue
I hope so. It’s not as if Roth, Murakami, or whoever the throng tout for, need the recognition.
