Well I never ,the novel the tale of inappropriate curiosity within a novel that start last week continued the Florentine tale that the Priest is reading as our hero slept in the bed in the inn ,is a tale of women love and honor in florence and is a wonderful piece of metafiction ,as it even seems written by a different hand than that of Cervantes ,I was well and truly enchanted with the story of Anselmo ,Camila ,Lothario and leenalo ,and was annoy when the don interrupted it ,he awakes slash a red wine skin and thinks it is the blood and head of huge giant he had been dreaming of engaging in battle ,but then we return and find that Camila has been found out and promise fidelity well for a time ,the priest strangely like this story of infidelity ,next there are som e arrivals at the inn where don sancho and the priest are held up and we enter in to another tale told by on of these new guest don Fernando and a lady and the captive Ruy who’s tale of escape from the moorish world we are being told his capture and attempts to escape the moors ,a tale of daring and the sea .
the two tales we end and start in this section show with out a doubt Cervantes talent and also his continuing influence on the modern written word ,the novel with in a novel is still being used as a tool in modern fiction in books such as kaviler and clay by Michael Chabon .
WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED ?
WHAT INFLUENCES ON MODERN FICTION DO YOU SEE ?

Stu – Its interesting to read someone else’s perspective on part 4. The whole book is as fresh as a daisy. I suspect a modern day editor would have slashed whole sections though!
yes ,probably wouldn’t been seen as saleable that is why there not a lot of metafiction ,all the best
Stu, I’m behind, again. But I enjoyed the tale of inappropriate curiosity. Cervantes’s storytelling power has no letup. He’s outdoing himself page after page. I’m no longer wondering why he is considered by some as the inventor of novel.
By the way, I think you’ll love these our knight’s woodcuts.
me too rise ,his brillance shines through the futher you get in the book ,all the best stu
I loved the Tale of Inappropriate Curiosity too! It could have been it’s own full length book and I’d be happy to read it. The stories within stories are fantastic, just as interesting as Don Quixote’s own adventures.
yes it could have been emily ,suprise no-one has considered re writing it as a novel in its self ,all the best stu
Still lagging behind, Stu, but you have me excited about Cervantes’ use of the novel within a novel trick in these chapters. Have you read much Borges? He was heavily indebted to Cervantes and has a wonderful short story called “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote” that I strongly recommend if you aren’t familiar with it. Happy reading!
I have read I few borges books ,think I ve read that story know I ve read a few of his tales about cervantes ,at time always felt bad that I not read it I may revist some of them after I ve read the don Quixote ,all the best stu
Hi Stu and everyone,
After finding last week’s 92 pages a major drag, I’m really enjoying this week’s pages. I think that TomC is spot on about a modern editor slashing pages out, and to be honest I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I’m skipping paragraphs here and there, but much less so this week than last week.
Jon
yes it probably wpuld the editors seem all powerful nowadays ,and metrafiction always seems to suffer ,all the best stu
