As this post goes up I m up in Scotland at My Grans funeral ,she had a love of books ,was a English teacher .From my Richard Scarry book as a small child through books on Irish Myths ,Saki ,Heyer and even Lord of the rings .There were many books I first saw and found out about at Gran’s .My greatest memory thou is drinking soda steams from glass bottles on a beach in Donegal whilst we made peat fire as a kid this was wonderful as we toasted our soda farls on the fire .
My condolences, I did not know you were heading to Scotland for your grandmother’s funeral. Sounds like she was a remarkable woman in life.

What first caught my eye is your words “book lover and teacher” for that is what I am as well. Then, I saw you are at your Gran’s funeral, and I want to offer comfort at her passing. It’s hard to be separated from those we love. I don’t know what those soda steams are you wrote of, but I, too, have found memories of sodas with my Grandmother. She was the one who let me have my ears pierced, she was the one with whom I giggled, she was the one who taught me fortitude and strength and so much faith. I love this post, may peace be with you.
And I’m sure you were out on those Donegal beaches, come hail or shine – as is the norm with our Irish weather! You will treasure your memories of your Gran, Stu.
Stu, I’m so sorry for your loss. Grandmothers are so important. My 94-year-old grandmother (who is Scots and English) is still an avid reader. When I was about nine, the librarian didn’t think I should check out a Pearl S. Buck novel. “Let her have it,” my grandma simply said. And from that day on, I was allowed to check out adult novels without question.
