We’ve just seen the Nobel Literature prize winnner is the Canadian poet, writer and translator Anne Carson. I have yet to read her I have her best known work Nox. She was running High in the betting for the prize this year. I like that a translator has won. I would love to know where to start with her works and which of her translations you’d sugggest.
Anne Patricia Carson
Anne Carson was born in Canada and teaches ancient Greek for a living. Her many books of poetry and translation include Antigonick, Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, Glass, Irony and God, Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, Nox, and Wrong Norma (winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry). from her New Directions bio

I don’t know anything about her.
I’m disappointed that Gerald Murnane has missed out again. I guess he’s missed his chance, an old white male isn’t ever likely to win it these days, no matter how great he might be!
The feeling is they do male female in alternate years but the likelihood of two English language winners back to back is slim
So maybe his time is gone of going
I think so.
Still, *smile* he has an international following and some enthusiastic locals who don’t need the cachet of the Nobel to recognise his genius.
And the Nobel, ever since that ridiculous award to Bob Dylan, is not what it was in terms of prestige.
I thought Anne Carson was a great choice. I’ve read some of her poems and her translations of Sappho and Euripides. I have Nox and The Story of Red tucked away in my TBR piles somewhere and will probably read one of those next, although I’m intrigued by her essays.
I’ve Nox I need to read something by her
