  1. Oh, this sounds like a wonderful idea!
You probably know a bit about Dutch authors, since you mentioned Cuijk to me in a comment once? I was going to write up a post on Dutch authors somewhere this month, but if you’d like any help or so, let me know!

    1. oh yes some help would be welcome ,know few dutch writers but not many ,all the best stu and thanks for your first comment

  2. What a great idea! Unfortunately Canada isn’t a qualifier, we need to work at our soccer skills apparently. For Nigeria I would recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I love her work.

    1. thanks amy .shame the passion for the ice hockey at the olympics was wonderful ,Owen Hargreaves grew up in canada if thats a help he plays for england ,all the best stu

  3. Great idea!
I guess which authors you chose will depend on who you want to win?!

I would recommend Saramago for Portugal and Cozarinsky for Argentina http://www.farmlanebooks.co.uk/?p=463.
I have lots of ideas for the other countries, but I’m sure you do too!
I have no idea for Germany, but I’m writing a post about that for tomorrow, so hopefully you’ll get some good ideas from there (or be able to add your own!)

    1. i ve loads for germany it is one of my favourite areas to read from although it is mainly the post war genration of writers ,going to be fair although some will be hard due to there being little or no translations out there so will have to look hard but hhopefully i ll find some gold thanks for the recomendations ,all the best stu

  4. I can definitely give you some kiwi ones, if you’re looking to read NZ writers (not sure how long we’re going to say in the cup though! we’re not really known for our soccer skills) You probably know Keri Hume and Janet Frame, here’s some other NZ authors and some of their works:

    Patricia Grace, Potiki
    Maurice Gee, Crime Story
    Witi Ihimaera, The Whale Rider
    Lloyd Jones, Mister Pip
    Eleanor Catton, The Rehearsal
Emily Perkins, Novel About My Wife
    Chad Taylor, Heaven

    1. thanks for them n=knew jones and grace and didn’t know catton was from new zealand ,no but you nearly always win at rugby ,all the best stu

  5. Argentina – Alberto Manguel – who has written some wonderful books about reading

    The Library at Night
    A History of Reading
    A Readers Diary etc,

  6. Oh this is a good idea. For Ghana:
    Changes by Ama Ata Aidoo
There is a new book by Nii Ayikwi Parkes – I forget the title
What a way to enjoy the world cup more.

  7. What a fabulous idea, Stu! I’d be more than happy to write a post for you – I especially love French authors like Zola, Maupassant, Pagnol, Dumas but I also want to read some Hugo and some more modern French authors (I have read a few 21st century French authors and have some more on my shelves at home).

I also have The Seamstress by a Brazilian author that I plan to read in the next few months.

I will check out some more authors for you too from other countries – would love to be involved in this.
